Rose Tea Cottage

Where tea is served at half past four

My cousin Grace Rose recently married her sweetheart. The wedding was at Bickleigh Castle just outside of Tiverton in North Devon, one of the most romantic wedding sites I have ever seen. The castle is steeped in history with the sixth century chapel being listed as the oldest living building in Devon. The castle is bordered by ancient woodland and the river Exe overlooking Devonshire countryside.

It was an enchantingly beautiful wedding. Gracie looked angelic in her Donna Salado over the shoulder strap white wedding dress.
What??? Her shoes were red!!! Has she gone mad?

I was shocked, quite honestly I had never seen a bride
wear anything but white shoes!!

Why didn’t I think of that?

In the past wearing coloured shoes was a fashion faux pas.

Today, it's a fashion trend.

Though initially it shocked me to see the red shoes,
I now fancy this new trend.
Or is it new to me? How long has this been going on????

Perhaps, my dear friend, Dustjacket Attic, the fashionista of Blogshire
can enlighten me!!

Darling what colour were your wedding shoes?

Oh what beautiful pictures!
I am not married, but I am not sure what colour shoes I would wear? I am not very good at walking in heels! So maybe a colourful pair would make up for the fact they will probably have to be flats!

Have a great day :-)

Love the idea of coloured shoes, a great fashion trend. My wedding shoes were white. What a scandal in those far off days if I had worn red shoes!!

How gorgeous!
I've never been married, but if ever I do, I will definitely be wearing coloured shoes!!
And will send you the pic to prove it x

Hi darling. I just adore the trend, I think it has been around a little while now. I got married when champagne and white were all the go .. would do it differently now! But that's the fun of fashion, always changing.

The wedding venue sounds divine, really something.

I loved your choice of pictures, so beautiful.

Beautiful photos, Duchess. I am not married but if I were I would love a pair of vintage shoes. I did see a bride with a beautiful pale blue pair the other day. I do love the idea of red however and the wedding venue sounds idyllic! xx

Fabulous Darling! I have never seen a bride wear coloured shoes before but I love it.

I had a dress of palest pink - ashes of roses - and cream satin ballet pumps with matching pink rosettes! Which caused a bit of a stir 20 years ago, but I think that was half the fun. I started out wanting a scarlet frock, but just couldn't find one!

The wedding sounds just so romantic and beautiful--and to get married at a castle! *sigh* Well, 20 years ago I wore satin slippers the same creamy color of my wedding gown. I would think people would want to see the bride, like from the head up, and not necessarily her feet...but anything goes these days. Why not? Have a great day! ; )

A beautiful bride. Wearing colorful shoes is new to me. Great pictures. The one with the man wearing the stripped socks was hilarious. Have a great day.

Mine were a light, matte silver with a brooch on each one that had a vintage look to them. The tiny buckles on the straps were encrusted with rhinestones. During the reception, I slipped them off and donned hot pink leather flip flops!

Always a lady :)

My shoes to the Scottish husband were tartan. Royal Stewart to match his kilt. I wanted to be a bit crazy too! Such a lovely post. You never disappoint my dear.

Dear Duchess,
Hope all is going well with you as well as the Rose Tea Cottage.

I am so delighted to know you and enjoy your beautiful Blog. I look forward to what you're going to post. Enjoy the lovely pictures as well.

Thank you for visiting me and having tea. I enjoy our visits and the fellowship.

I really like the colored wedding shoes...this takes me by surprise because as I get older I find myself such a traditionalist.

Perhaps I will enter into another phase that is neither here nor there.

I was married back in 1974 and wore ecru colored dress with same colored shoes. I hope to post about this next week. The trend was solid white and I went ecru.
Just a tad bit rebellious...but I felt like a Princess on my Wedding Day.

Autumn Blessings to you,
d

I think its a lovely idea. Different, but in a good way. Unexpected and fun. In cultures like china and india red is the traditional wedding colour.

Love it! Mine were gold to match the gold scalloped hem of my gown. They had a one inch, rhine stone strap across the toe, a three inch, gold heel, and gold satin ribbon that laced up the leg. Gorgeous but God they were painful. It's funny, they didn't hurt until I took them off. That was when the sense of a nail jamming into the ball of my foot kicked in. Ouch!

Good evening Your Grace (I believe that's the correct form of address, please correct me if I'm wrong!) What a delicious blog you have here. Thanks very much for popping over to mine. I have two things I need to tell you:

1) My wedding shoes started the day as white silk, but became a little green with yellowing patches during the photos. Shame, but that's English summers for you!

2) Having read your profile, I know you will be shocked to learn that we lived in Harrogate for five years and never once took tea at Betty's! Our excuses are to do with having two small boys and no money, but we still feel rather bad about it...

Just discovered your wonderful site and I am absolutely smitten--I am a tea lover through and through, enjoying all the props, flavors, rituals and the tea, of course. As for colorful wedding shoes, I see it as an opportunity for creativity and I love the trend. My wedding shoes were a metallic bronze and complemented the metallic thread in some of the embroidery on my dress.
Beautiful site ~ I'll be back!

Wow Duchess - is that your cousin in the top photograph? She looks like a film star!!!

A castle wedding how lovely. My niece married at a castle last year too - we had a fantastic day even though the weather was the worst ever - so bad that there were floods in a lot of areas of England on 6 September 2008. Even though she only married last year she stuck to tradition and had white shoes.

I married 21 years ago, on the same weekend as my niece did last year, but it was 3 September (carnival day in our town) - unlike my niece's day mine was beautiful sunshine. I wore white shoes too, they had bows on the front, my gown and the bridesmaids' dresses had bows on too. I never even thought of wearing coloured shoes, although my favourite colour is red. Back then I think it would have been a bit out of place to wear coloured shoes, and I think my dear departed mother would have been a little horrified!!!!

Some friends of ours married on 31 October - Halloween - last year and they had a Halloween theme - sadly we couldn't make the event and I still haven't seen any photos - must ask to take a look at them.

I must do a post with photos from my wedding day very soon.

As usual your post is absolutely divine.

I love the idea of red shoes!! My husband and I were married in a garden and comfort was a huge consideration for me. I had a favorite pair of black suede Puma flats that were the most comfortable shoes I owned. I ordered another pair for the wedding that were the palest lavender color with small details in magenta (our wedding colors were shades of white with shades of purple). Everyone who saw them thought they were ballet slippers and loved them! And they were so comfortable! But at the end of the night, I saw my husband's niece walking barefoot in the grass and I followed suit!!
